The right way to build a soundproof box for a generator
A generator is the perfect solution for when you need electricity in an emergency, but you don’t have access to a power grid. But sometimes, they’re a little too loud. For the past couple of years, we’ve been running our home generator in the garage. It’s a good solution, but it still isn’t perfect. We need a way to keep the noise down. So, we decided to try building a soundproof box for our generator. You need to know how to build a soundproof box for a generator, so that you can be prepared for any emergency.
What is a soundproof box?
Nevertheless, a soundproof box is a very simple tool. It’s a box that’s designed to keep noise out of a specific area. The idea is that you put your generator inside the box, and then you cover the box with a solid sheet of plywood. That way, you’ll be able to keep the noise down. But you need to make sure that the box is large enough to fit your generator. If not, you’ll have to find a way to get around that.
Types of soundproof box for a generator
There are two different types of soundproof boxes for a generator:
First one is a box made from metal
It’s a good option if you’re looking for something durable. It’s also a good option if you’re going to be using the box on a regular basis. However, you should know that it’s not the best option if you want to keep the noise down for a long time. That’s because metal doesn’t hold up well over time. Eventually, it will start to rust. And once that happens, it won’t be able to keep the noise down anymore.
Second one is a box made from wood
This type of box is much better than the metal box. It’s more affordable, and it’s also more durable. It’s a good option if you want to keep the noise down for a long time. The only downside is that it’s not as strong as the metal box. It’s a good option if you’re looking for something cheap.
What to consider before building a soundproof box for a generator?
You should consider the following before you build a soundproof box for a generator:
The size of the generator
The bigger the generator, the louder the noise. The noise level will depend on the size of the generator. For example, a small generator will produce a lot less noise than a larger one. That’s why you need to know how big the generator is before you start building the box.
The size of the box
The size of the box will also determine how loud the noise will be. The bigger the box, the louder the noise. That’s why you need to know how big the box is before you start building the box.
The material you’re going to use
The material you’re going to use will also determine how loud the noise will be. You need to know what kind of material you’re going to use. For example, you can use metal, or you can use wood. The material you choose will determine how loud the noise will be.
The location of the generator
The generator needs to be located in a place where there’s a lot of air flow. That’s because the noise is produced by the exhaust fan. The exhaust fan is part of the generator, and it creates the noise. You need to make sure that the box is located in a place where there’s a lot of air flow. That way, you’ll be able to keep the noise down.
The weight of the box
You should know that the weight of the box will also determine how loud the noise will be. The heavier the box, the louder the noise. That’s why you need to know how heavy the box is before you start building the box.
How much space you have
The amount of space you have will also determine how loud the noise will be. The more space you have, the louder the noise. That’s why you need to know how much space you have before you start building the box.
What kind of material should I use to build a soundproof box for a generator?
On the whole, you should use a wooden box. Wooden boxes are a good option because they’re both durable and affordable. They’re also a good option because they’re easy to work with. However, you should know that wooden boxes aren’t as strong as metal boxes. That’s why you should make sure that you’re using a strong material when you’re building the box.
Typs of Tools and Materials to build a soundproof box for a generator
In order to build a generator box, you’ll need to gather the following materials:
- Measuring tape
- Circular or table saw
- Medium density fiberboard (MDF)
- Mass loaded vinyl (MLV)
- Acoustic foam mats
- Green Glue Noiseproofing Compound
- Ventilation ducts
- Right-angled ruler
- Pencil and paper
10 Steps to build a soundproof box for a generator
1. Measure the Generator
It comes in different sizes and shapes. That s why the first step to making a quiet room is to measure the generator. Make sure you don’t take this step lightly as you’ll end up with a box that won’t fit.
Write down your measurements on paper, don’t forget to add a few inches on all sides.
2. Build a Frame for the Box
Create the perfect frame for the generator using furring strips. Measure the generator, then cut some strip boards, which are a few inches taller than the generator, to make the frame’s legs.
After you’ve screwed the small blocks into the middle section of the legs, cut a few small blocks from the furring strips. Screw these small blocks to the edges of the inner sections of each of the legs. These small blocks are for the interior panels.
When the box is done, put the top piece of wood on each pair of legs, and attach each pair of legs using a top plate. The side panels will keep the sides of the box from collapsing.
Then, measure the distance between the footpads.
3. Create the Panels for the Sides of the Box
Create the Panels for the Sides of the BoxUse a lightweight foam backer board to create the panels for 5 out of the 6 sides of the box (leaving the bottom side open). Namely, cut the inside and the outside panels according to the measurements you took from the frame.
Screw the outside panels on first. Use the small blocks to then screw the inside panels on top of the outside ones. The spaces between the outside and the inside panels should be equal to the width of the small blocks on the sides of the leg.
Because you’re in a hurry, you’ll get a double-paneled box with the bottom side open.
4. Stuff the Cavity with Insulation
Insert insulation between the inside and outside panels. Then, turn the box so that the top of the box is facing down and cut the insulation into sheets.
After you’ve placed the sheets into the box, cover up the bottom by capping it off with furring strip boards. Then seal the insulation in-between the inner and outer panels of the box.
5. Cut Out a Channel
The best method for cutting the channels for your exhaust pipes is to use an oscillating multi-tool.Cut out a channel for the generator using a table saw or a circular saw. Make sure you cut the channel big enough for the generator.
6. Paint the Box
When you are ready to begin painting the box, have it painted. The paint used should be the color of your choice.
7. Install a Handle
In order to create a portable box for your next project, install a handle. Screw a small block of the furring strip board on the inside of the top side panel and attach a handle to it. Screw the handle onto the board from the outside.
8. Seal the Box
After you’ve attached the generator to the box, seal the inside of the box. You can do this using a spray can of foam.
9. Install an Extended Exhaust
Once your generator is running smoothly, you can install an extended exhaust pipe on the generator. The pipes you had previously cut out for the pipe and the cords to go through are now in use.
If you are trying to find a place to hide the generator, then make sure that the finished box you are using has an open bottom and you can fit the long exhaust pipe through it.
10. Final Touches
When you’re done with your project, create an opening to let some air in. This will keep the temperature of your generator from getting too high, which could cause damage to your device.
You’ll need to remove the side of the generator box before fitting the insulation piece. Finally, to further improve the level of acoustic insulation, you can fit an exterior insulation panel on the inlet.
That piece should be angled at 45 degrees and will help to direct the sound downward so that the noise reduction qualities of the box are improved.
Benefit to build a soundproof box for a generator
There are several benefits to building a soundproof box for a generator. The first is that it will prevent noise from being created by the generator. This could be very important if the generator is located in a room where people live or sleep. Another benefit is that it will prevent the generator from creating vibrations that could cause damage to the home. A third benefit is that it will make it much easier to hear sounds coming from the generator and will help you know when there is a problem with the generator.
If you’re planning to install a generator at your home or business, you’ll want to make sure that it’s protected from noise. A generator can produce a lot of noise—enough to disturb your neighbors and make your home less comfortable. But you can protect your generator from the outside elements by building a soundproof box.
